In a research conducted by the Commerce Clearing House Inc., it was found that due to unscheduled absences made by employees of most small businesses, there were added costs of more or less $62 thousand dollars per annum. This does not include the cost of scheduled sick leaves. According to a new survey by Mercer, "The Total Financial Impact of Employee Absences," the total cost of absence can equal as much as 36% of payroll (compared to 15.4% for health care coverage). For a midsize business, this unplanned absence can account for as much as $4.5 million dollars per year.
